Internships and Practical Experience

The curriculum includes a number of practica whose purpose is to give the student training and experience in important aspects of the pastoral ministry. In them, students will gain experience in the preparation and delivery of sermons, in counseling, in hospital chaplaincy, prison ministry, inner city ministry, and in personal evangelism. Students will also have the opportunity of participating in the work of a local congregation under the supervision of the pastor. Additional experience is given in leading and participating in public worship as each student is asked to share in conducting the daily chapel services.

Following the Junior and Middler years, students will be encouraged to have supervised field work experience under a pastor. At least one internship is required for graduation. Additional internships may be taken in the summer, during the academic year, or for a longer period following graduation. The Professor of Pastoral Theology will help students to make arrangements for such field work.

Students may serve during their Senior year as supply preachers in local churches.
