Four Ways We Can Give Back to God
In my last column I said that Christians should approach our Last Act of Stewardship differently than the world would have us do our “estate planning.” The challenge we as Christians should consider is: If we don’t fund and support the ministries of God’s Church and Kingdom, who will?
Let me suggest four ways that you might consider giving back to God a portion of what He has given you.
Count the Church as a Child
If you have three children, divide your estate four ways and return to God the same portion that you will give to each of your children. You can also divide this portion into various amounts or percentages for the Christian causes that have been meaningful to you.
Tithe Your Estate
Many of us use the biblical guideline of giving 10% of our possessions to the Lord throughout our life. This can easily be followed in our Last Act of Stewardship as well.
Give a Specific Bequest
This is usually generated by a special interest we have in a ministry and/or specific work of that ministry. For example, we might decide to leave $25,000 to fund an endowed scholarship at RPTS so that each and every year, until Christ returns, we can assist in the preparation of a new pastor.
Give Your Leftovers
This is merely stating in your Last Act of Stewardship document that you wish to give “the rest, residue and remainder of your estate to . . .” This statement follows after all other directives you have made to family and others. You may either give it “undesignated” (without restrictions so that the Seminary can use your gift as it deems most needed) or you may “designate” it for a specific work/program of RPTS.
These are just four thoughts. You may want to do something much different than what is suggested here.
It is the hope of those who serve at the Reformed Presbyterian Theological Seminary that you have a passion for the preparation of pastors to preach God’s Word in the soundness of the Scriptures. There are many needs at the Seminary to help maintain and strengthen this vital ministry. We trust that you will want to visit with a representative of RPTS to discuss ways in which you can help meet the needs of the Seminary’s mission, while at the same time serve your interest.
If God is leading you to inquire about leaving a legacy to the work of RPTS, please contact the Seminary via phone (412) 731-6000, or email Mark Sampson [email@example.com] or Don Reed [firstname.lastname@example.org]. We will be happy to visit with you to discover how you can become an eternal partner in preparing people for the preaching of the Gospel and service in His Kingdom.
